Battle of Fort Darling

American Civil War Naval Battle (1862)

At Battle of Fort Darling, May 15th, 1862 (part of the Peninsula Campaign), the federal Navy sent 5 gunboats, including the USS Monitor, to attack Fort Darling at the mouth of the James River. The Union fleet encountered numerous underwater obstacles and precision fire from the fort forcing their retreat.
