Battle of Natural Bridge

American Major Civil War Battle (1865)

The Battle of Natural Bridge, March 6, 1865, was by means a large battle but it was important none the less. A group of Confederates consisting primarily of teenage students from what became Florida State University and old men in the Home Guard, were able to defend against Union assaults. The Union force was composed of two regiments of USCTs (United States Colored Troopers). This action kept the Confederate Capitol City in Florida, Tallahassee, from falling into the Union Army's control. Tallahassee was the only Confederate Capitol east of the Mississippi River not to fall into Union hands during the Civil War.
