Indian Poet and painter (1861-1941)
Born in Calcutta into a wealthy Brahmin family, Rabindranath Tagore was a writer, playwright, songwriter, poet, philosopher, and educator. He was hardly known outside his native Calcutta until he was awarded the 1913 Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first Nobel Laureate in all of Asia.
