Revolutionary War

British vs. American War of Independence (1975-1781)

The Revolutionary War between Great Britain and the American colonists began on April 19, 1775 in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. For over ten years, the colonists had suffered under British domination concerning taxes, trade and finally a requirement to quarter a British standing army. George Washington led the American army. Members of the American Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. After many years of victories and losses, Charles Cornwallis surrendered his British army after the Battle of Yorktown on October 19, 1781. The formal peace treaty was signed by the United States and Great Britain on September 3, 1783 in Paris.
