Third Battle of Winchester

American Major Civil War Battle (1864)

Jubal Early, commanding Confederate forces fought Philip Sheridan and his 40,000 men at the Third Battle of Winchester on September 19, 1864 during Sheridan's Valley Campaign.

Because of the heavy causalities (about 9,000) and the large number of General Officer who were wounded or killed this battle is considered by many to be one of the most important battles to take place in the Shenandoah Valley.
