Tommy (rock opera)
British rock opera 1969
The Who's Tommy (rock opera) was a 1969 double album written and composed primarily by the band's lead guitarist, Pete Townshend. The world's first "rock opera," it tells the story of a "deaf, dumb and blind kid" who unwittingly becomes the leader of a messianic movement. The album inspired a 1975 movie directed by Ken Russell and starring Who lead singer Roger Daltry as Tommy. There have been several stage versions, including a 1993 Broadway musical that won five Tony Awards.
