On This Very Spot in 1866 the First Baptist Church was organized of former slaves.

On This Very Spot after a devastating fire, the church was rebuilt into the present day structure entirely out of bricks donated by members of the parish each week, earning it the nickname of the "brick-a-day church."

On This Very Spot in 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ralph Abernathy organized the Selma to Montgomery Civil Rights March, a key event in the American Civil Rights Movement.
