On This Very Spot in the 19th century was the major market that sold everything from land to livestock, and even slaves.

On This Very Spot on February 15, 1861 the inaugural procession for Jefferson Davis passed through the square on its way to the Alabama State Capital building.

On This Very Spot on March 25, 1965 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led the final blocks of the Selma-Montgomery Civil Rights march.
