Elton John (then Reg Dwight) was an Exhibitioner at Junior Academy, the Royal Academy of Music’s programme for talented young musicians. He says: “I have always regarded my training at the Royal Academy of Music as vitally important to the development of my career as a musician”.

On This Very Spot on July 3, 2002, the first Honorary Doctorates awarded in the Academy's 180-year history were presented to Sir Colin Davis and Sir
Elton John. Professor Curtis Price, Principal of the Academy, said: “Elton John, who is one of the most gifted and influential musicians in the world today, laid the foundations of his career at the Academy. So it is entirely fitting that he should be receiving the highest honour awarded by the University of London.”
On This Very Spot on May 19, 2004, Elton presented the first
Elton John Scholarships to Academy students. The scholarships were endowed by Elton for talented young musicians who might otherwise be unable to study at the Academy. The annual scholarships are financed in perpetuity by a dedicated
