On This Very Spot, General James Oglethorpe founded the city of Savannah. It is a destination spot for tourists looking for colonial era architecture. The city was the only major one in Georgia not burned by General William Tecumseh Sherman in his March to the Sea during the American Civil War. Sherman captured the city and rather than burn it - as he had done to Atlanta - he presented the city to President Abraham Lincoln as a Christmas present.
