On This Very Spot in 1831, U. S. Army Lt. Robert E. Lee married Mary Anna Randolph Custis in the parlor of her parents' home. Her father, George Washington Parke Custis, was George Washington's stepson.

On This Very Spot from 1831 to 1861, Lee and his family lived with his wife's parents.

On This Very Spot on April 20, 1861, Lee wrote his resignation from the U.S. Army before joining the Confederate Army.

On This Very Spot following the Civil War, the land was confiscated by the U. S. Government and Arlington National Cemetery was established.
