In 1952 and 1953, Kemmons Wilson built the first three Holiday Inn Hotels on the main highways leading into Memphis. The first was built on the east side of town on Highway 79 (Summer Avenue), the route to and from Nashville. The second and third were built on the north and south sides of town on Highway 51. (Highway 51 South is now Elvis Presley Boulevard.) All three ceased to be Holiday Inns long ago, and this is the only one of the three still standing.

On This Very Spot in 1953, Kemmons Wilson opened the second Holiday Inn. At that time, this was the southern edge of the city, and Highway 51 was the pre-interstate route to and from Mississippi.
